Women of the Aweil community celebrate at St Marys

A group of 10 Aweil women worked together to organise this event meeting regularly to discuss the program and manage the project. The Cultural Day was held at Memorial Hall, St Marys and showcased the strength, wisdom and traditions of Aweil women. The event was attended by Twic, Mayardit, Bor, Abyei and Rumbek, other communities of South Sudan who also joined in the performances.

Angelina Wol and Ajak Yel (pictured below) of the Aweil Community Association in NSW led the project supported by Garang Agou and Jasmina Bajraktarevic of the NSW Service for the Treatment and Rehabilitation of Torture and Trauma Survivors (STARTTS).

The project supported the Aweil community in its maintenance of culture by passing on performance and other traditions to a younger generation of women, keeping culture relevant and vital.
