What is placemaking

We didn't quite get out 7 tips to you before the closing of the  Magnetic Places Grants Program, but be assured that on the ground we met with novel ideas and keen artists and applicants right until the end. This post though is a generally useful one, on place-making especially since Magnetic Places encourages a creative process that involves collaborations with local residents to achieve this in public spaces.

Place-making is the transformation of a public space. The term ‘public space’ refers to a place that is open and accessible to everyone, regardless of gender, ethnicity, or socio-economic background. It is in public spaces that we negotiate our common interests and express our differences, where we celebrate creativity and can share our stories.

For more ideas on place making we recommend reading The Enabling City, Chiara Camponeschi, see http://www.pps.org/reference/what_is_placemaking/

What does place making mean to you?

Does your project involve place-making as the central focus?

Does it activate a public space?
